Dr. Calil Kairalla Farhat

PACE was very sad to mark the passing of Dr. Calil Kairalla Farhat in September 2010, after a long battle with cancer.

The death of Dr. Farhat is a great loss to the entire community of health professionals dedicated to the control of infectious diseases. His numerous achievements in the field of pediatrics and his commitment to public health have served as an inspiration for us all.

Dr. Farhat was a major force with PACE, and we honor his contributions to the fight to prevent pneumococcal disease. Please read about his distinguished career below.

Dr. Calil Kairalla Fahrat is a titular professor in the Pediatrics Department of Federal University of São Paulo and titular professor of infectious diseases on the medicine faculty of Marilia, São Paulo, Brazil.

He has participated in more than 100 scientific events in Brazil in which he presented 310 scientific works and in 80 international events where he presented 28 scientific works.

Dr. Fahrat created post-graduation courses in pediatrics infectology and in immunization at the São Paolo School of Medicine/Federal University of São Paulo. He was president of Latin American Society of Pediatrics Infectology in 1998 and 1999, and was one of the society’s founders in 1984. He also was a founder of the World Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Fahrat has been a speaker in 1480 conference presentations, lessons and symposia, 1200 in Brazil and 280 abroad. He has published 170 research papers, with 30 of them in international scientific journals. His published books include four editions of Foundations and Practices in Immunization (5th edition in progress); two editions of Perinatal Infections; one edition of Infections and Parasitosis in Pediatrics; three editions of Pediatric Infectology; and three editions of Synopsis in Pediatrics and Infectology.

Dr. Fahrat has received 39 honors in Brazil and abroad, and he has been distinguished with an Honours Diploma from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
