Dr. Fred Were

Kenya Paediatric Association

Dr. Fred Were is a pediatrician and specialist in neonatal medicine. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1984 and pediatric specialization in 1990, both at the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Between 1991 and 1993 he pursued and obtained a fellowship in neonatology from Monash Medical Centre at Manash University in Melbourne, Australia. Upon returning to Kenya in 1994 he joined the University of Nairobi where he still serves as a senior lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics. He completed and was awarded doctorate in medicine at the University of Nairobi in 2006.

Dr. Were became the national chairman of the Kenya Paediatric Association (KPA), an affiliate of the International Paediatric Association, in 2003 and holds the position to date. He has overseen the transformation of KPA into a public health focused group. The association is currently involved in the national pediatric HIV/AIDS care project and interventions for improving newborn survival at the community level. He is also the principal investigator of a PnemoADIP small grants project aimed at enhancing health worker and health administrator awareness of pneumococcal disease and vaccination in Kenya. He has more than 20 peer reviewed publications, mainly in newborn health.
