Dr. Jesus Feris Iglesias graduated as Doctor in Medicine in 1971 and in 1975 obtained his degree as Specialist in Pediatrics from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and Hospital Infantil de Mexico. Since 1975 he has been teaching pediatrics at Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where he serves as the titular pediatrics professor.
From 1975 to 1978, Dr. Feris served as chief of the Intensive Care Department at the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo, and in 1978 became chief of the Infectious Disease Department. Since 1980, Dr. Feris has worked in clinical research and has had more than 70 scientific papers in national and international journals. In recognition of his article entitled "Risk factors for intrathoracic tuberculosis in children from economic migrant populations of two Dominican Republic bateyes," Dr. Feris received the 2010 Burtis Burr Breese award, presented by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. His most recent publication, "Preventable deaths in sickle-cell anaemia in African children," was published in the February 2010 issue of The Lancet.
Dr. Feris was the founding President of the Sociedad Dominicana de Infectologia and National Institute of Health, President of the Dominican Pediatrics Society and Sociedad Panamericana de Infectologia (2007-2009) and is the President of the Fundacion Dominicana de Infectologia, Inc. He is the recipient of the James Nakano prize, given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia in recognition of his publication of the best medical article in 2001. Dr. Feris was also given the Federico Gomez Medal at the Federico Gomez Children´s Hospital in Mexico City, an award granted to the most outstanding international pediatric doctor. He was named the Master of Dominican Pediatrics by the Dominican Pediatrics Society in 2007. In 2009 Dr. Feris was selected by the Dominican First Lady’s Desk to receive the Best Pediatrician of the Year award.
