Dr. Sergio Cabral is President of the International Pediatric Association (IPA). He also holds the presidency of the Rio de Janeiro Pediatric Society and the Brazilian Pediatric Society where he founded the Brazilian Academy of Pediatrics, comprised of the most prominent pediatricians in the country.
Prior to holding these positions, Dr. Cabral was a central figure in the development of a Pediatric Intensive Care program in Brazil where he led the first Board examinations of this subspecialty. He is currently Chancellor for Health Sciences at Estacio de Sa University in Rio de Janeiro. He is also Chief Clinical Director of Neonatal Intensive Care in one of the major public hospitals in Rio.
His talent in organization and his status within the profession have allowed him to play leadership roles in many local and international organizations and conferences, including chairing the 30th Brazilian Congress of Pediatrics and the Joint IPA/ Brazilian Pediatric Society Symposium, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1997 and drew over 6,000 participants.
Dr. Cabral has published papers covering pediatrics, pediatric emergencies and pediatric intensive care research. He is on the editorial advisory board of the Brazilian Journal of Pediatrics and has co-authored many books on child health and healthcare. He is also engaged in medical education at the University in Rio de Janeiro where new teaching processes are being tested and a broad Family Medicine program is being carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Federal and State governments.
