Merck Serono plans to double its donation from 25 million tablets to 50 million tablets and will continue a commitment to donations indefinitely, until schistosomiasis has been eliminated in Africa. In a press statement released today, Merck Serono said that in addition to doubling their annual donation of praziquantel, they will financially support a WHO-led school-awareness program in Africa aimed at preventing the occurrence of schistosomiasis.

Not many people know about neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) - a group of parasitic infections that cause needless suffering among more than 1 billion of the poorest people worldwide. END7 is a campaign to see the end of 7 of the most common NTDs by 2020. All it costs is 50¢ to treat and protect one person for one year.

Sabin president, Dr. Peter Hotez recently published a new editorial in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) which calls on the NTD community to use the upcoming presidential and congressional elections as an opportunity to advocate for increased NTD funding. Dr. Hotez points out that NTD control programs have long had bipartisan support, and that regardless of election outcomes, NTD control should be championed as an essential component of US international development assistance.
