Sabin Vaccine Development has been preparing a remote field site in the northeastern part of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, for clinical trials of experimental hookworm vaccines. A special educational video was designed for the community to introduce new scientific concepts related to the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative's work and to improve knowledge of hookworm, a disease that is highly prevalent in the area.

Rubella, also known as German measles, is generally a mild infection, but can cause serious birth defects if contracted early in pregnancy. In 2007, there were nearly 200,000 reported cases of rubella and 203 reported cases of CRS. Although the rubella vaccine has helped the US eliminate indigenous rubella cases, rubella and CRS surveillance is inadequate and should be expanded and strengthened.

In Brazil, millions of people are infected with intestinal worms. Although there are effective drugs to treat worm infections, they’re not universally available and can’t prevent future infections. Now a team of scientists are trying to develop a vaccine against one of the most damaging parasites, hookworm. It will be the first vaccine against a multi-cellular organism. (Rockhopper.tv)
