Through his proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget, President Barack Obama has taken a strong and positive stance in support of global efforts to eliminate the tremendous human suffering caused by infectious and neglected tropical diseases.

2009 was a tremendous year here at the Sabin Vaccine Institute as we strove to fulfill our mission of reducing human suffering caused by infectious and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

Sabin Vaccine’s Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative (HHVI) is one of 32 projects chosen for inclusion in Case Studies for Global Health released on November 20, 2009 by the Alliance for Case Studies for Global Health. The Alliance is a collaboration of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Health Organization's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), Global Health Progress (GHP), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).

Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia) is the second most lethal parasitic worm disease, infecting approximately 207 million people and causing 280,000 deaths annually worldwide. Thanks to generous donations from Mort and Chris Hyman and Mr. Len Blavatnik, trustee at the Blavatnik Charitable Foundation, the Schistosomiasis Vaccine Program is becoming a reality.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 8, 2005 – The Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute, a leader in promoting the development and use of vaccines to prevent disease, today announced that it has received a grant of US$21.8 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Sabin Vaccine Institute will use this grant—one of the largest awards ever in helminth infection research—to advance its Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative (HHVI).

WASHINGTON, DC, January 26, 2005—Clinical trials to test the safety of a first-of-its-kind human hookworm vaccine will begin in the Washington, DC area in a couple of months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conferred investigational new drug status on the vaccine.

NEW CANAAN, CT, September 15, 2004—The Sabin Vaccine Institute, sponsor of research funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on a newly developed vaccine to prevent human hookworm disease, has signed a memorandum of understanding with federal and state vaccine production facilities in Brazil for clinical development of the vaccine, including clinical trials and vaccine manufacture.

NEW CANAAN, CT, August 19, 2004—An article published today in The New England Journal of Medicine calls attention to the enormous impact of parasitic hookworm infection on the developing world poor. The authors of “Current Concepts: Hookworm Infection” have studied the parasite over many years and describe the disturbing effects of mild infection as well as the disease state that results from heavy hookworm infection.
