An editorial published by Sabin President Dr. Peter Hotez today in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) Neglected Tropical Diseases, calls on the G8, Gulf Cooperation Council nations, and neglected tropical disease (NTDs) endemic countries, such as Nigeria and Indonesia, to fund global NTD control efforts.

Sabin Vaccine’s Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative (HHVI) is one of 32 projects chosen for inclusion in Case Studies for Global Health released on November 20, 2009 by the Alliance for Case Studies for Global Health. The Alliance is a collaboration of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Health Organization's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), Global Health Progress (GHP), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).
Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia) is the second most lethal parasitic worm disease, infecting approximately 207 million people and causing 280,000 deaths annually worldwide. Thanks to generous donations from Mort and Chris Hyman and Mr. Len Blavatnik, trustee at the Blavatnik Charitable Foundation, the Schistosomiasis Vaccine Program is becoming a reality.
WASHINGTON, DC, January 26, 2005—Clinical trials to test the safety of a first-of-its-kind human hookworm vaccine will begin in the Washington, DC area in a couple of months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conferred investigational new drug status on the vaccine.
