First Regional Meningococcal Symposium
Meningococcal disease is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in individuals of all age groups.Infants, young children and adolescents have the highest risk of contracting meningococcal meningitis. Meningococcal infections have a rapid onset of symptoms, and may result in permanent neurological disabilities and death if left untreated.
Progress Toward Rubella Elimination and CRS Prevention in Europe
Rubella during pregnancy often results in severe congenital abnormalities. Fortunately, the rubella vaccine has successfully eliminated rubella from the entire Western Hemisphere and Scandinavia. However, rubella continues to occur in much of Europe, in Asia and in Africa, and the WHO estimates that over 100,000 infants are born each year with congenital rubella syndrome. The Sabin Vaccine Institute, together with the March of Dimes, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is undertaking a series of advocacy activities to promote vaccination against rubella throughout the world.
See the End from the Beginning: END7 Campaign Sneak Peak at ASTMH
The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases is celebrating the launch of END7, a new campaign in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). They will be hosting an evening reception at the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene's (ASTMH) annual conference in Philadelphia on December 5, 2011. The event will be hosted by Dr. Peter Hotez, Sabin president and outgoing president of ASTMH, and the Global Network's managing director, Dr. Neeraj Mistry.

Third Annual Partnering for Cures Meeting
We are pleased to announce that Sabin president Dr. Peter J. Hotez has been selected as an Innovative Presenter at the Partnering for Cures conference, which is taking place this November at the Grand Hyatt hotel in New York City. In its third year, the Partnering for Cures meeting brings together leaders from all sectors in medical research with the express purpose of fostering collaboration to address some of the most pressing medical challenges. The meeting is convened by FasterCures, the Washington, DC-based center of the Milken Institute. Other presenters include Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

World Health Summit 2011
Opportunities for Linking NTD Control with Control of AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases is pleased to announce our participation in the World Health Summit 2011 this October in Berlin, Germany. The motto of this year's summit is “Today’s Science – Tomorrow’s Agenda". In accordance with this motto, the Global Network is participating in a partner symposium, entitled "Opportunities for Linking NTD Control with Control of AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria" on Sunday, October 23rd from 1:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

2011 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award Ceremony
Since 1994, the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal has been awarded annually in conjunction with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) Annual Conference on Vaccine Research. The fourteenth annual NFID conference will be held in Baltimore, Maryland and the Sabin Vaccine Institute will host the 2011 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award ceremony at the conclusion of the NFID conference, on Wednesday, May 18, 2011.

Vaccine Information Session
jt_CdeQ and Journalists 2_0.jpg The Sabin Vaccine Institute in partnership with Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia convened the Vaccine Information Session in Lima, Peru on April 14 – 15, 2011. The two day meeting was organized for journalists currently reporting on Global Health and attracted 30 journalists from 17 countries in the Region of the Americas.

First Sabin Vaccine Institute Colloquium on Sustainable Immunization Financing (SIF)
The Sabin Vaccine Institute hosted the "First Sabin Vaccine Institute Colloquium on Sustainable Immunization Financing (SIF)" from March 28-29, 2011.

Delegates from thirteen of the SIF Program's fifteen pilot countries gathered for the first global health conference dedicated to sustainable immunization financing. They addressed various programmatic, financial, policy and legislative hurdles that must be overcome if the countries are to internalize their routine immunization program costs and reduce their external partner dependency. The delegates identified their action points going forward in the Addis Ababa Declaration.

    Les délégués de chacun des 15 pays pilotes du programme SIF (FDV) se réuniront pour la première conférence sur la santé mondiale dédié au financement durable de la vaccination et se pencheront sur les différents obstacles programmatiques, financiers, politiques et législatifs qui se posent devant l'internalisation des coûts de vaccination et la réduction de la dépendance envers les bailleurs de fonds.

    Prevention of Child Killers: Pneumonia and Diarrhea
    PACE_RGB_stacked.png On November 22, 2010, key health advocates from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq met for a symposium to address the burden of pneumococcal and diarrheal diseases across the Eastern Mediterranean region.

    The symposium convened select Ministry of Health staff from participating countries, Technical Advisory Group (TAG) members, Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI), professional medical society leadership, pediatricians and university staff to discuss and collaborate on recommendations for expanding pneumonia and diarrheal vaccine access across the region.

    SEC 2010 Symposium on Smallpox Eradication
    Sabin convened along with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and Fogarty International (NIH) the symposium: “Smallpox Eradication after 30 years: Lessons, Legacies and Innovations." Over 260 delegates from 34 countries attended the four day meeting hosted on the historic campus of FIOCRUZ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 24-27, 2010.

    9th International Rotavirus Symposium
    The 9th International Rotavirus Symposium brought together over 385 scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders and others from over 65 countries. The event was designed to provide an update on relevant research that will inform public health agendas related to rotavirus gastroenteritis. A Global Call to Action was issued highlighting the facts associated with rotavirus and the commitment of those in attendance to move the agenda forward.

    The Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award Ceremony
    The 2010 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award was presented to Dr. John D. Clemens, President, International Vaccine Institute; on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in conjunction with the 13th Annual Conference on Vaccine Research sponsored by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). The Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Sabin Vaccine Institute to recognize a researcher who has made extraordinary contributions in the field of vaccinology or a complimentary field. The medal commemorates the legacy of the late Dr. Sabin, who discovered the oral polio vaccine and worked tirelessly during his lifetime to see it and other vaccines utilized globally.

    Regional Symposium on New Vaccines
    Sabin and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) co-hosted the "Regional Symposium on New Vaccines" in Lima, Perú. On December 1-2 over 160 government leaders, physicians, researchers and other concerned stake holders came together to share the latest research on diseases and vaccine developments. Peruvian Minister of Health Dr. Oscar Ugarte Ubillus opened the meeting and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to advance new vaccines as important tools in public health.
