Sabin will co-sponsor a symposium to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Smallpox eradication, as officially reported by Global Commission for the Certification of Smallpox Eradication. The symposium will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 24-27, 2010.

The 9th International Rotavirus Symposium will bring together scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders, vaccine industry representatives, and members of the donor community. The event aims to provide an update on relevant research that will inform public health agendas related to rotavirus gastroenteritis.

The 2010 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award will be presented on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in conjunction with the 13th Annual Conference on Vaccine Research sponsored by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID).
The Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Sabin Vaccine Institute to recognize a researcher who has made extraordinary contributions in the field of vaccinology or a complimentary field. The medal commemorates the legacy of the late Dr. Sabin who discovered the oral polio vaccine and worked tirelessly during his lifetime to see it and other vaccines utilized globally.
This year, the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award ceremony will be held in downtown Washington, DC in the City View Room at The George Washington University while the NFID conference will take place in Bethesda, Maryland. Registration is required.

Sabin and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) co-hosted the "Regional Symposium on New Vaccines" in Lima, Perú. On December 1-2 over 160 government leaders, physicians, researchers and other concerned stake holders came together to share the latest research on diseases and vaccine developments. Peruvian Minister of Health Dr. Oscar Ugarte Ubillus opened the meeting and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to advance new vaccines as important tools in public health.

To raise awareness of the leading killer of children under 5 years old, Sabin is helping organize the first annual World Pneumonia Day. As part of a global initiative, World Pneumonia Day will feature several events around the world from a dodgeball tournament in the United States to a national scientific and policy symposium in Bangladesh.

PACE program members will travel to Dhaka, Bangladesh to lead a series of events in support of the first World Pneumonia Day. The commemoration will begin with a press conference and roundtable discussion on November 1 followed by a rally and symposium on November 2 to urge government action to fight pneumonia.

On March 4, PACE held its annual strategy meeting to coincide with the 4th Regional Pneumococcal Symposium in Johannesburg, South Africa. PACE Council members - leading global experts on pneumococcal disease – convened to review progress toward prevention and hone PACE’s strategic plan for 2009.

The 4th Regional Pneumococcal Symposium brought together over 185 scientific experts, key decision makers and public health professionals from 38 countries around the world who have dedicated their efforts to pneumococcal vaccine development and control of pneumococcal disease. While in Johannesburg they reviewed progress toward safe, effective pneumococcal vaccines and addressed many questions, including how to make sure they get to the world's poorest children.

The problem of pneumococcus in all its aspects, epidemiology, clinical and sequelae behavior, points of view from laboratories, and most importantly prevention and treatment were discussed at the sub-regional symposium held on October 1 - 2, 2008, in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

The 8th International Rotavirus Symposium was held in Istanbul, Turkey on June 3-4, 2008. The meeting was a collaborative effort of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, PATH, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The event attracted representatives from over 67 countries who engaged the full range of scientific, social, and economic challenges that must be overcome in order to prevent this major killer of children.

Public Health officials from throughout the Americas gathered with immunization and disease experts May 12-13, 2008 in Mexico City to discuss new approaches to fighting cervical cancer in the region. “Toward Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control in the Region of the Americas” was hosted by the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In February of 2008, around 50 immunization experts from the Americas gathered in Bogotá, Colombia, to discuss strategies for broadening the adoption of pneumococcus, rotavirus and HPV vaccines. The Sub-regional Symposium on New Vaccines provided an opportunity for health planners in Peru and Colombia to share their experiences, needs and goals; to dialogue with international researchers; and to lay the groundwork for adopting vaccines against these diseases, as well as establishing the surveillance necessary to measure their impact.

The 3rd Regional Pneumococcal Symposium held in Istanbul, Turkey on February 13-14, 2008, brought together 200 participants from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania as well as officials from the World Health Organization and representatives from multilateral agencies and pharmaceutical companies to discuss the latest advances of Pneumococcal vaccines.

The Sub-Regional Symposium on New Vaccines: Pneumococcal, Rotavirus and Human Papilloma Virus, was held in Caracas, Venezuela, 29-30 January 2008. Over 85 Public health experts, clinicians, and policy makers from Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia, along with representatives of global health agencies examined the evidence available to decision makers, and discussed progress in addressing issues central to vaccine introduction. Safe, new vaccines for rotavirus, pneumococcus and human papilloma virus are available, and some have already been introduced in Latin America.
