World Pneumonia Day Events

PACE has been actively involved in promoting awareness and prevention of pneumonia. Here are some of the activities PACE members organized and participated in for World Pneumonia Day 2009:

  • October 26, 2009 - Johannesburg, South Africa
    World Pneumonia Day Press Briefing
    A group of infectious disease experts and public health officials held a press conference in Johannesburg to bring attention to World Pneumonia Day. During the event they discussed the enormous burden of pneumonia and efforts to reduce its incidence around the world and in South Africa.
  • November 1, 2009 - Dhaka, Bangladesh
    World Pneumonia Day Press Briefing
    National and regional child health experts held a press conference to draw attention to World Pneumonia Day and the impact of pneumonia on Bangladesh.
  • November 1, 2009 - Dhaka, Bangladesh
    Nationally Televised Roundtable
    Opinion leaders and child health experts held a roundtable discussion about pneumonia that was broadcast on national television. The event helped bring national and political attention to the issue of pneumonia in Bangladesh.
  • November 2, 2009 - Dhaka, Bangladesh
    World Pneumonia Day Rally and March
    A group of child health organizations organized a rally and march in Dhaka to bring greater public visibility to the first-ever World Pneumonia Day in Bangladesh.
  • November 2, 2009 - Dhaka, Bangladesh
    Symposium on Pneumonia
    A scientific symposium on childhood pneumonia was held in Dhaka to educate pediatricians, public health officials and politicians from around the country about pneumonia and current prevention strategies.
  • November 2, 2009 - New York City, United States
    Global Pneumonia Summit
    Several PACE members spoke at a high-profile summit on pneumonia, bringing attention to the disease and urging world leaders to make it a global health priority. The event also included a briefing by the World Health Organization and UNICEF on their joint Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP).
  • November 10, 2009 - São Paulo, Brazil
    Symposium on Pneumonia
    A scientific symposium was organized to review the epidemiology of pneumonia in the country and discuss diagnostic, prevention and treatment strategies for the disease.
  • November 21, 2009 - Nairobi, Kenya
    Run for Child Survival
    The annual Run for Child Survival in Kenya brought together health experts, athletes, families, and others to raise awareness about child survival in Kenya. The theme of this year’s run was World Pneumonia Day.
