Earlier this month, the Coalition against Typhoid (CaT), along with partners at the Bangladesh Pediatric Association, the International Vaccine Institute andthe International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), convened the 8th International Conference on Typhoid Fever and Other Invasive Salmonelloses in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Researchers and health professionals, as well as local, national and international policy makers were in attendance.

Rwanda’s measles-rubella vaccination campaign, which is being launched today, is the beginning of an effort to vaccinate more than 700 million children under 15 years of age against two disabling and deadly diseases.

As the prominence of dengue grows, the need for an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of the burden of disease becomes more and more important. For dengue, this means not just mortality but also morbidity; the true cost of the disease lies not just in the lives lost, but in the burden placed on health systems, the days of work missed, and other harder to calculate figures.

The Gates Foundation recognized Sabin senior program officer Dr. Hélène Mambu-ma-Disu in particular for her work in establishing sustainable immunization financing in African countries.
