The Regional
Pneumococcal Symposium was held in Istanbul, Turkey on 13-14
February, 2008. This meeting covered the status of pneumococcal
vaccine development and implementation, reviewed the estimates of health
and economic burdens of the disease, reviewed the epidemiology of the
disease, and identified key actions for the advancement of
pneumococcal disease prevention in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the
Middle East.
In partnership with the Pan American Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and PneumoADIP, the Sabin Vaccine Institute has organized several regional pneumococcal meetings throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean. These regional symposiums have brought together scientists, medical doctors and public health professionals in the field of immunization to discuss key actions for the advancement of pneumococcal prevention in the Americas. Further, the symposiums have taken the opportunity to discuss other new vaccines such as rotavirus, influenza, and HPV. The Second Regional Pneumococcal Symposium was held in São Paulo, Brazil on December 13 and 14, 2006. This meeting was a collaborative effort of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Pan American Health Organization, GAVI's PneumoADIP at Johns Hopkins, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta.
