WIPO Re:Search is a forum for organizations in both the public and private sectors to share knowledge, expertise, and intellectual property (IP) with members of the global health research field, with the goal of further promoting the development of new vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and tuberculosis. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) administer the program.

Congratulations to WIPO Re:Search on its one year anniversary !

Since WIPO Re:Search’s launch a year ago, its membership has nearly doubled in size, from 31 member to 61 members representing all five continents.  There has been a particular growth in African based organizations, which will contribute to improved research and development for diseases endemic to Africa.  This past year, WIPO Re:Search members created ten research collaborations or agreements, and have more ideas in the early stages for further development. Members of WIPO Re:Search met in Geneva to celebrate their one year anniversary analyzing their successes and addressing areas for future progress and development in the coming years.

By joining WIPO Re:Search, members agree to make IP accessible to researchers around the world without royalties.  The research must be relevant to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), malaria, and/or tuberculosis.  Furthermore, the products which result from this research will be royalty free for the least developed countries.

Making IP accessible to all countries at each stage of development is a main purpose of the WIPO: ReSearch. WIPO Director General Francis Gurry said, in an article commemorating the one year anniversary on the WIPO’s website, “WIPO Re:Search is a key component of the WIPO’s agenda to demonstrate that the intellectual property system can and does work to benefit countries at all levels of development.”

Sabin is proud to be both a Supporter, original member and User of the WIPO Re:Search platform, and we look forward to continuing to build relationships with all its members in the years to come!
