Dr. de Quadros and Hotez featured in Vaccine special supplement!
Today, the journal Vaccine published a special supplement that highlights discussions and research presented at the historic symposium “Smallpox Eradication after 30 Years: Lessons, Legacies and Innovations,” which took place in Rio de Janeiro in August, 2010. The symposium was organized by the Fogarty International Center, the Sabin Vaccine Institute and FIOCRUZ.
Reflecting on his experience as the World Health Organization's (WHO) Chief Epidemiologist for the Smallpox Eradication Program in Ethiopia from 1970 to 1977, Dr. de Quadros contributed several articles in which he discusses his experience in Ethiopia and offers methods for applying those lessons to eradicate other diseases such as measles and rubella.
As a leader in neglected tropical disease research, development and treatment, Dr. Peter Hotez looked toward the future and called for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) to be the next focus for elimination. In his article, “Enlarging the Audacious Goal: Elimination of the world’s high prevalence neglected tropical diseases,” Dr. Hotez hopes to see many NTDs controlled or even eliminated by the end of this decade through a combination of mass drug administration programs and vaccine development efforts.
This special supplement featuring Sabin’s leadership showcases how our organization continues to honor Dr. Albert B. Sabin’s legacy through our efforts to ensure that existing vaccines and medicines reach the world’s poorest people and our work to develop safe, effective and low-cost vaccines.
You can read the all articles contributed by Drs. De Quadros and Hotez as well as the entire supplement via Vaccine’s web page.
