Supporting Immunization Managers this World Immunization Week
This post is part of our World Immunization Week blog series. Stay tuned for more blogs highlighting the benefits of immunization and the work Sabin is doing to support immunization programs worldwide.
As we celebrate World Immunization Week, it’s important to recognize the immunization managers across the globe that are bringing us closer to achieving the international immunization goals outlined in the Global Vaccine Action Plan.
Immunization managers at state and national levels are helping expand the full benefits of immunization to all people through managing and integrating the many elements of a successful immunization program: cost-effective and dependable procurement processes, reliable funding, an effective cold chain, consistent monitoring of vaccine safety and efficacy, effective surveillance systems, and more.
To help sustain this massive effort, Sabin’s International Association of Immunization Managers (IAIM) is supporting immunization managers through two recently launched programs: the Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program and the Training Scholarship Program.
The Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program provides immunization managers with a chance to learn from each other and share best practices. For example, an immunization manager from Nigeria could travel to visit an immunization manager in Vietnam, with IAIM support, to learn more about the management of information systems or vaccine supply, cold chain, and logistics. The visit typically lasts five business days, and is focused on a management theme chosen by the immunization manager applying for the peer-to-peer exchange.
The Training Scholarship Program provides IAIM members with opportunities to enroll in trainings, short courses and seminars on topics vital to immunization program management. IAIM currently aims to support up to 18 training scholarships between 2014 and 2017 to enhance immunization managers’ capacity to advance their immunization programs.
The Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program and Training Scholarship Program were unveiled during a recent webinar hosted by the IAIM Secretariat and Governing Council. Over 60 participants from around the world joined live to learn more about the association and its benefits. Applications for the first cycle of awards for both programs are due in mid-May; interested immunization managers should visit the IAIM website, www.iaimanagers.org, to learn more.
Immunization managers are the backbone of immunization programs worldwide and are responsible for improving the health of millions of people. This World Immunization Week, we’re recognizing their efforts, and providing them with opportunities to double their impact.
