Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) were on the agenda this week at the Sixty-fifth session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.

A major milestone was reached when the WHA today approved a new resolution on elimination of schistosomiasis.

Introduction

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia or “snail fever”, is a parasitic disease carried by fresh water snails infected with one of the five varieties of the parasite Schistosoma.

Merck Serono plans to double its donation from 25 million tablets to 50 million tablets and will continue a commitment to donations indefinitely, until schistosomiasis has been eliminated in Africa.
