Meningococcal disease is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in individuals of all age groups.Infants, young children and adolescents have the highest risk of contracting meningococcal meningitis. Meningococcal infections have a rapid onset of symptoms, and may result in permanent neurological disabilities and death if left untreated. Even though the majority of meningococcal infections occur with seasonal variation, meningococcal disease has the potential to produce epidemics.
In the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, meningococcal disease is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. However, a better understanding of the true burden of meningococcal disease in the region is urgently needed. The most effective method of preventing meningococcal disease is through vaccination.
Over 180 delegates from 21 countries attended The 1st Regional Meningococcal Symposium in Buenos Aires to discuss and exchange ideas that may lead to the overcoming of financial, logistical, and political obstacles to meningococcal prevention through vaccination. Approved presentations are now available for download and a comprehensive proceedings document is in production.
