The problem of pneumococcus in all its aspects, epidemiology, clinical and sequelae behavior, points of view from laboratories, and most importantly prevention and treatment were discussed at the sub-regional symposium held on October 1 - 2, 2008, in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Over 150 health experts from nine countries in the Latin America and Caribbean regions, along with representatives from PneumoADIP, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), PATH, The Sabin Vaccine Institute, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), came together to discuss the fight against pneumococcal.
