Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Hilary Koprowski, former Sabin Gold Medal winner
It is with sadness that the Sabin Vaccine Institute notes the passing of Dr. Hilary Koprowski, 2007 recipient of the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award, and one of the past century’s foremost leaders in virology.
A contemporary of Drs. Albert Sabin and Jonas Salk, Dr. Koprowski was the first to test a polio vaccine in large-scale human trials, and his work on a live-virus vaccine laid the foundation for Dr. Sabin’s oral polio vaccine. Beyond this early work, Dr. Koprowski’s achievements covered a range of scientific advances, including creating an improved vaccine against rabies and helping to develop monoclonal antibodies, which are a key to effective cancer immunotherapy.
