Sabin's Dr. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi, and Kristy Murray say Houston urgently needs a comprehensive program for disease detection and prevention.

"These are all neglected tropical diseases, and they have become major issues in the health of Houston. This should not come as a surprise. Houston has emerged as an important international-gateway urban center that is growing rapidly. In fact, we soon will become the third-largest U.S. city, while our port is one of the largest in the country. All these factors increase our risk.

But globalization also carries with it a responsibility to care for the poorest people who face the greatest risk of global disease because of poverty, human migration and climate change."
