Sabin Executive Vice President Dr. Ciro de Quadros will join Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in New York this morning for a presentation of Mr. Gates' Annual Letter and a panel discussion on "Polio Eradication and the Power of Vaccines." The event will be webcast live on the website of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Globally, polio has been reduced by 90% and is endemic in only four countries. This success is credited in large part to the discovery of the oral live polio vaccine by Dr. Albert B. Sabin, in whose honor the Sabin Vaccine Institute was founded. Panelists will discuss why now is the time to rid the world of polio and to ensure that all children have access to lifesaving vaccines.
Dr. de Quadros, who contributed to the eradication of smallpox worldwide and directed polio and measles eradication efforts in the Americas, will give his personal insights on how vaccines prevent needless suffering and death.
"Polio eradication is within our reach and we must not turn back on years of progress and dedication. Future generations will thank us for our persistence," said Dr. de Quadros.
The discussion, held at the Roosevelt House in honor of the anniversary of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's birth, will be moderated by ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer.
