Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Philip K. Russell Named to New HHS Office of Public Health Preparedness

WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced at the beginning of the month that retired Maj. Gen. Philip K. Russell, M.D., the founding president of the Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute will join the department as a special advisor on vaccine development and production. Russell is an expert on virology who was Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command.

Vaccine Developer John B. Robbins to Receive Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal

Arlington, Virginia – John B. Robbins, who played central roles in the development of vaccines to prevent Haemophilus Influenzae B (Hib), a leading cause of meningitis, and pertussis, has been chosen as the ninth recipient of the Albert Sabin Gold Medal. The Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute awards the medal annually to an exemplary contributor to disease prevention.
