In 2005, the concept of bundling together multiple chronic parasitic and related infections into the category of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) was proposed because they could be targeted simultaneously with a package of low cost and donated drugs.

HUGH Taylor's war on trachoma began 35 years ago. As a young doctor, he travelled the red dirt roads of the Tanami Desert in a beat-up Land Rover with the late Fred Hollows dispensing medical help to an estimated 10,000 Aboriginal men, women and children with the catastrophic eye disease.
The London conference on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) held in January was a seminal moment in the global fight against a group of diseases which are often overshadowed in the global health agenda by HIV, malaria and TB.
