The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences has announced that Dr. Peter Hotez will deliver the 2013 David Packard Lecture at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), on March 5, 2013, at 3 p.m. The annual Packard Lecture, hosted by USU’s Faculty Senate, is the university’s most prestigious lectureship.

In the article, Dr. Hotez and his author, Dr. Dorina Papageorgiou of BCM discuss an opportunity to build a new scientific institution for neglected infections of poverty strategically located in Greece, the geographic center of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Infecting more than 1 billion people globally, the 7 major Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) cause blindness, disfigurement, anemia and cognitive impairment, and yet can be controlled or even eliminated by taking pills once or twice a year.NTDs are not simply neglected in terms of awareness and resource allocation but also in the sense that they affect some of the most neglected communities on the planet – those at the end of the road, those for whom fresh water and hygiene are challenging and those whose access to the health care is limited.
