LONDON – February 3, 2014 – Sabin Foundation Europe today announced the election of James Beery, Senior of Counsel, Covington & Burling, to the Board of Trustees. Mr. Beery has extensive experience in the life sciences industry, including serving as SVP and General Counsel of GlaxoSmithKline plc in London, and as a non-executive director on a number of European and U.S. life sciences corporate boards.
“Mr. Beery has expertise in navigating the complex issues facing the life sciences industry. His understanding of the life cycle for vaccines and drug therapies, coupled with his corporate experience, will help advance Sabin Foundation Europe’s work to combat vaccine-preventable and neglected tropical diseases,” said Morton P. Hyman, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “We are honoured to welcome Mr. Beery to the Board of Trustees.”
Before joining Covington & Burling in 2002, Mr. Beery practiced law in London, New York and Tokyo. He is a member of the State Bars of New York and California. He attended Harvard College and Stanford Law School.
“I am excited to join Sabin Foundation Europe and collaborate with key public and private partners to raise the profile of diseases crippling the world’s poorest people,” said Mr. Beery. “There is an urgent need to produce and deliver life-saving interventions, but it cannot be accomplished by one industry alone. Sabin Foundation Europe’s strong network of pharmaceutical, corporate, government, academic and non-profit advocates is a tremendous asset in the global effort to empower people worldwide through good health.”
Mr. Beery joins current Sabin Foundation Europe Board of Trustees members Morton Hyman, chairman of Sabin Foundation Europe and Sabin Vaccine Institute Board of Trustees; Jeremy Lefroy, member of Parliament, UK House of Commons and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Malaria and NTDs; and John Cummins, group treasurer of the Royal Bank of Scotland and member of the Group’s Management Committee and Finance Executive Committee.
