A vaccine that fights pneumonia and other diseases could save the lives of thousands of children each year in Latin America, but high costs have kept it from those who need it, a researcher told a congress of health professionals Thursday.

Achieving success in the global fight against the "big three" diseases-HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, which together account for 5.6 million deaths a year-may well require a concurrent attack on the world's most neglected tropical diseases, says a team of researchers in the international open access journal PLoS Medicine.

Sabin Vaccine Institute (Sabin) announced personnel changes made to strengthen the Institute’s efforts in the area of cancer vaccines. At a January 12 meeting in New York, the Board elected Axel Hoos, MD, PhD, as a trustee and approved the appointment of Robert Allen, MD, as vice president for cancer programs.

Sabin Vaccine Institute (Sabin) announced the appointment of Ciro de Quadros, MD, MPH as interim president and CEO of the Washington, DC- based non-profit organization. For the past three years, de Quadros served as director of international programs for the Sabin, leading initiatives to improve children’s health through rotavirus and rubella immunization in Latin America.
