The development of a successful vaccine is a significant undertaking that takes years to achieve. The Vaccine Development Program is a collaborative, international effort with a common goal – the development of the first-of-their-kind safe, effective vaccines against human hookworm and schistosomiasis. Our program is broad, diverse, and includes renowned organizations in Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, Australia, and the United States. Our esteemed partners include:

The George Washington University (GWU) - Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine
www.gwumc.edu/microbiology
Washington, DC, USA
GWU is primarily focused on early process development of the recombinant antigens. This includes antigen discovery, process development, formulation and testing, animal testing, immunological/potency testing and technology transfer to Instituto Butantan, a Brazilian vaccine manufacturer, or Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, a vaccine manufacturer in the USA.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ)
www.fiocruz.br
Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil
FIOCRUZ serves as the center for epidemiological assessments, clinical testing and the management of a vaccine testing center in rural Brazil, complete with a clinic and field laboratory.

Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR)
www.qimr.edu.au
Brisbane, Australia
QIMR performs research and development activities primarily for target candidate discovery, early evaluation, characterization and ranking.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)
www.lshtm.ac.uk
London, England
LSHTM designs and conducts statistical analysis of the clinical trials in Brazil. They also conduct mathematical modeling and cost-effectiveness analysis which have informed our global access strategy including vaccine development, introduction, distribution and financing.

Instituto Butantan
www.butantan.gov.br
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Insituto Butantan is a public sector vaccine manufacturer in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which produces 80% of the nation’s vaccines. A member of the Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturing Network, Instituto Butantan serves as the Brazilian manufacturing partner for technology transfer, scale-up process development and clinical grade manufacture of the hookworm and schistosomiasis vaccines.

Walter Reed Army Institute of Research
wrair-www.army.mil
Silver Spring, MD, USA
WRAIR Pilot Bioproduction Facility is a multi-use facility designed and operated for production of vaccines in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations which ensure that products prepared in this facility will be safe, potent, and reproducible. WRAIR serves as the U.S manufacturing partner for the hookworm vaccine.

The Institute of Parasite Diseases, Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
www.chinacdc.net.cn/n272562
Beijing, China
IPD carries out research and training, coordinates the national research program on parasitic diseases, and provides scientific and technical guidance to research centers in China. IPD performs preclinical testing by utilizing a unique model to evaluate the same species of human hookworm that is being targeted by the vaccine, Necator americanus.
