Position Title: Vice President, Communications

Position Summary:
The Vice President of Communications (VP) is the senior advisor for Sabin’s communications initiatives. They will be responsible for planning and executing communications, digital media, marketing and public relations strategies and associated project management. The VP will be a strategic thinker that thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that requires flexibility and a capacity to adapt quickly to change. They will have experience leveraging communications expertise in a social entrepreneurial environment and will lead a dynamic communications team focused on planning, directing, monitoring and implementing a comprehensive strategy that elevates awareness of Sabin’s mission, programs and staff on an international scale. The incumbent will possess the proven ability to inspire and motivate internal and external parties and will function as the subject-matter expert for all of Sabin’s communication and public relations outreach activities.


Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s brand identity, increase awareness of its programs, and increase visibility of the organization and its staff with key stakeholder audiences
  • Lead the organization’s communications activities, including development of content for print and digital, web, traditional and social media, and video
  • Provide high-level strategic guidance organization-wide, and specifically to the executive team and other members of the senior management team, to strengthen the organization’s brand and presence
  • Support Sabin’s fundraising efforts through the development of promotional materials and provide messaging support
  • Ensure all communications services are coordinated in support of Sabin’s strategic objectives

Public Relations & Media

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s media and public relations strategy
  • Manage and develop relationships with immunization champions and media, leveraging these relationships to optimize and significantly increase Sabin’s visibility and its outcomes using all available promotional channels
  • Implement widespread coverage for targeted programs through earned and paid social and traditional media

Management & Operations

  • Manage and oversee central communications team responsible for writing, editing, graphic design, audio/visual production, digital media, public relations, and other collateral for internal and external audiences
  • Lead, supervise and mentor a team of communications professionals
  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance on the implementation and maintenance of Sabin’s websites and social media platforms
  • Lead the establishment of communications policies, protocols and procedures; work cross-departmentally with program leaders, management and staff to translate strategies to actionable communication programs and initiatives
  • Simultaneously manage and implement multiple short-term and long-term communication projects and keep projects on time and within budget with the use of project management tools and ongoing, open communication with staff and/or consultants and vendors
  • Develop, manage, and implement annual communications budget
  • Ensure strong oversight of consultants and vendors to deliver on-time and within budget
  • Other related duties, as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
  • 16+ years relevant experience that includes leadership managing strategic communications, media relations and public relations, preferably in health/life sciences; experience working in a grant-funded, mission-driven environment and/or in global health is highly desired
  • Seasoned communications/PR expertise and the ability to interpret emerging trends, transfer knowledge to peer executives and implement as appropriate to enable continued achievement of the organization’s vision
  • Significant experience developing and executing multi-channel strategic communications plans
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including ability to distill complex, highly technical issues into compelling communications
  • Experience managing communications teams and developing and implementing project and departmental budgets
  • Strong project management skills, including experience with various project management tools
  • Demonstrated success securing high-level cross- functional collaboration; ability to establish leadership credibility and inspire teams to achieve common goals
  • Big picture/strategic thinker; thinks holistically and incorporates overall company objectives in developing team strategy and decisions
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and ability to adapt to a dynamic environment
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels, including Boards of Trustees, coalition partners, staff and organizational contacts; excellent at working closely with others over geographical distance
  • Budget oversight and decision-making experience; ability to identify risks and skilled at contingency planning
  • Experience managing, mentoring and coaching people; able to build relationships and understand what motivates others
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with purpose and accuracy to develop time-bound and value-add project deliverables
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to manage and organize complex tasks, flexible, dependable and able to prioritize competing demands to meet established timelines
  • Must demonstrate interest in furthering Sabin’s mission
  • Ability to travel with notice
