Position Summary: 
 
The Vice President, Financial Reporting & Accounting is an integral member of the senior management team and directs all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll, budgeting and financial reporting. This position requires a “roll up the sleeves” mentality to effectively support Sabin’s mission.  In practice, this means that maintaining supporting schedules and entering journal entries are a part of the job. Frequent  interaction with senior management , executive leadership, the finance committee and the board at a strategic level is anticipated 
 
Responsibilities:
 
Financial Statement and General Ledger 
  • Reporting: Prepare timely and accurate financial reports which summarize Sabin’s activity and financial position; oversee and coordinate all financial/accounting and standard reporting; prepare project financial reporting as required by funders
  • General Ledger: Manage, review and oversee balance sheet supporting schedules, prepare adjusting journal entries and process monthly and year-end closings; maintain the general ledger and ensure the chart of accounts is current and complete
 
Budgeting and Forecasting 
  • Lead the preparation of the annual budget, which are primarily based on funded activities with incremental budgeting for non-program activities. Work with accounting colleagues and budget managers to evolve and innovate the budgeting process to address Sabin’s needs, strategies, and financial realities. Monitor budgeting and accounting activities, comparing actual results to budget during the year
  • Prepare project budgets and narratives to support fundraising activities in pursuit of new funding; support the fundraising team as applicable  
 
People Management 
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of accounting professionals to assure quality customer service, support career growth pathing and evaluate performance. Strive to maintain a strong customer service and inclusive mentality that helps drive the mission forward 
 
Policy and Compliance 
  • Oversee compliance with all required federal, state, local, payroll, property and other applicable taxes.  Particular attention to be paid to state compliance as related to Sabin’s remote work environment
  • Assist colleagues in their understanding and compliance with Sabin policies impacting the accounting function 
  • Lead and/or support new policy development impacting the accounting function  
 
Other 
  • Manage labor allocation and preparing and posting semi-monthly payroll entries, expensing health and disability entries into the accounting system
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Requirements:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; advanced degree or CPA certification preferred 16+ years of overall accounting, budgeting and financial reporting experience to include 7+years of non-profit accounting management 
  • Demonstrated or proven experience managing U.S. government funded projects is a highly preferred
  • Experience driving strategy
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Word) and Zoom video conferencing Proficient in Microsoft Dynamics NAV or similar accounting software preferred
  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Paylocity or similar payroll software
  • Knowledge of integrating systems, apps, software with each other preferred
  • Proven ability to successfully manage people
  • Experience handling confidential and sensitive information; ability to exercise discretion and show good judgment; demonstrates honesty, integrity and trust building behaviors in all situations
  • Excellent customer service skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels, including Boards of Trustees, staff and organizational contacts 
  • Strong attention to detail and writing skills, ability to manage complex tasks, highly organized, dependable and able to prioritize competing demands to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with purpose, urgency and accuracy in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
  • Periodic work in the DC office as needed
