Position Summary:

The Vice President, Research & Development Operations is a key member of Sabin’s Vaccine Research & Development (R&D) team. The VP, Research & Development Operations plays a pivotal role in program execution by planning, coordinating, and overseeing project management activities for the R&D program, ensuring development and implementation of efficient operations and cost-effective systems to meet current and future needs of the organization. The Vice President works collaboratively in moving forward product development milestones, funding, and strategy, internally and externally via effective alliance management.  As Sabin works to proactively expand its project pipeline, the VP of Research & Development Operations works with other senior management team members to develop and implement a long-term pipeline strategy and identify and evaluate assets for development.  Sabin aims to drive vaccine candidates through development; the VP will leverage their robust set of experiences and qualifications to achieve this objective.


Program Management

  • Lead, execute and ensure the successful delivery of Sabin’s vaccine R&D projects on time and in budget  
  • Ensure that budgetary, technical and human resources are allocated properly for the achievement of short- and long-term objectives
  • Lead creating and managing timelines, which crosswalk to budgets, via work breakdown structure, integrated master schedules and other project management tools
  • Proactively identify issues and provide concrete, plausible solutions to resolve
  • Proactively manage project risks and work with a cross functional team to mitigate risks or plan contingencies
  • Support execution of prime contract and subcontract documents and preparation of subsequent amendments
  • Able to step into a PI role (or as co-PI) on an interim or other basis 

Alliance Management

  • Work collaboratively with internal colleagues and external collaborators to keep abreast of and monitor projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements and/or contractual clarifications
  • Lead project reporting requirements to partners and funders, including U.S. Government agencies
  • Serve as senior management point of contact for partners and collaborators; may also apply to funders
  • Lead subcontractor/consultant management related to deliverables, timeline, budget and reporting

Strategic Planning

  • Together with R&D Team, identify and evaluate new product candidates to expand vaccine R&D product pipeline
  • Together with R&D Team and Resource Development & Policy Team, identify new funding opportunities to support R&D pipeline development and participate in proposal development

Organizational Management

  • Recruit qualified talent; mentor, coach and train team members, as assigned
  • Supervise direct reports and reflect Sabin’s supervisor goals
  • Support the development and execution of the strategy to expand the R&D pipeline
  • Ensure compliance with all Sabin policies, as well as funder and partner policies
  • Oversee Sabin-wide project management matters and provide input on best practices to other Sabin teams
  • Ensure internal systems and procedures for subcontractor management support and reporting requirements
  • Represent Sabin and promote its mission at events and meetings
  • Other related duties, as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; advanced degree preferred
  • 16 + years’ relevant experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment
  • 12+ years’ experience project managing U.S. Government FAR-based R&D contracts
  • Well-versed in implementing Project Progress Management tools/techniques to monitor project costs and schedule
  • PMP Certification preferred
  • Expert in using MS Project and other project management tools
  • Proven fiscal management experience, driving strategy and fundraising
  • Proven ability to manage people, build relationships and understand what motivates others
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator with ability to tailor approach toward the perspective of others; public speaking experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels, including Boards of Trustees, coalition partners, staff and organizational contacts; excellent at working closely with others over geographical distance
  • Ability to independently analyze and solve problems, excellent time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to manage complex tasks, highly organized, dependable and able to prioritize competing demands to meet deadlines
  • Effectively manage projects so problems are anticipated and solutions identified quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
  • Superior service orientation
