GSK Grants Exclusive Technology License For Clinical-Stage Ebola Vaccines To Sabin Vaccine Institute

LONDON / WASHINGTON, D.C. – GSK and the Sabin Vaccine Institute (Sabin) today announced exclusive agreements for Sabin to advance the development of the prophylactic candidate vaccines against the deadly Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan and the closely related, but lesser known, Marburg virus.

Ebola & Marburg

The 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa infected more than 28,000 people, took more than 11,000 lives and spurred funders and vaccine developers to urgent action. Years later, Ebola has returned and the world still lacks any treatments or licensed vaccines to protect against it or the closely related, but lesser known, Marburg virus.

Amy Finan, chief executive officer of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, discussed Sabin’s commitment to vaccine development and the challenges of developing and bringing vaccines to market.

Why is Sabin committed to vaccine development?

For 25 years, Sabin has been a trusted partner, working with countries, the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and regional stakeholders to improve immunization.

Last night, more than one hundred guests joined together to honor Dr. Paul Offit as the recipient of the 2018 Sabin Gold Medal. Colleagues, family, friends and peers gathered at the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, D.C., to celebrate Dr. Offit’s contributions to immunization, including his achievements as the co-inventor of an oral rotavirus vaccine and his leadership as a vocal and dedicated advocate for immunization.
