São Paulo, Brazil
20 - 21 September 2007

In September 2007, the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and GAVI’s PneumoADIP collaborated with Brazil’s Ministry of Health to hold a two day symposium devoted to laying a foundation for joint influenza and pneumococcal surveillance work in Brazil. The insights gained regarding the scientific, technical and logistical challenges to combined pneumococcal and influenza disease surveillance were instructive not just for Brazil but for all countries seeking improvements in their ability to evaluate new vaccines. Over 100 participants from ten countries attended this meeting.
