Orin Levine 

Trustee

Orin Levine is an experienced, mission-driven executive leader and infectious disease expert with over 30 years of experience advancing global health equity through innovation and execution.  Passionate about evidence-based advocacy, Orin has played a key role in accelerating vaccine access and other proven health interventions worldwide. His experience spans leadership roles on global boards, including Gavi, and collaborating with senior executives to drive impactful change.

Among Levine’s notable contributions are expanding vaccine access and improving health equity with efforts such as establishing the first-ever Advance Market Commitment (AMC) and overseeing Gavi’s Pneumococcal Vaccines Accelerated Development and Introduction Program. Under his leadership, the program influenced global policies, including the WHO recommendation for universal pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction, and secured over $1.5 billion in donor funding for vaccines.

As a Gavi Board member representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for nearly nine years, Orin developed a deep understanding of the dynamics between countries, donors, and industry. He also contributed to the creation of the COVAX AMC and served on multiple Gavi committees that shaped industry deals and policies.

A former tenured Professor at Johns Hopkins University and Senior Director at the Gates Foundation, Orin’s academic and professional background spans research in respiratory infections, meningitis, and sepsis. He led the largest multi-center study of childhood pneumonia etiology, enrolling over 9,500 children in seven countries. Orin holds a Ph.D. in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University and currently serves on boards for the Center for Global Development, the US National Academy of Medicine, and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
